Remembering the day WW2 started

Remembering the day WW2 started

Martyna, our Business Services Assistant, sat down with one of our wonderful clients, Marjorie, who shared some truly fascinating stories from her childhood during World War II.

Marjorie remembers a warm Sunday in September of 1939 starting out as an ordinary day. As the eldest of 4 children, Marjorie was asked to play outside with her siblings while her parents waited for an important radio broadcast.

At 8 years old, Marjorie was a curious child, so once outside, she snuck by the window and listened in. It is then that she heard the dreaded words from the then Prime Minister, Neville Chamberlain: “I have to tell you now that no such undertaking has been received, and that consequently this country is at war with Germany.”

Marjorie admitted it was a difficult concept to grasp as a child, and said many children were not aware of the true devastation that was occurring due to the world war. Living in a rural village in the Peak District, Marjorie also recalls the day that ‘evacuees’ arrived at their village. She said everyone was very curious about what these ‘evacuees’ would look like, so one can only imagine the village children’s shock when the evacuees looked just like them: regular kids!

She also recalls the blackout periods during the war. She remembers her mother making curtains, and her father making shutters, as homes were not allowed to show any light as to not become bombing targets. Marjorie fondly remembers how ‘you could see a million stars’ in the sky due to the lack of manmade light.

Marjorie also shared one incident where her and her friends were playing in the woods, when they suddenly heard a plane making a ‘funny noise’. She recalls the plane flying so low, they could see the pilot’s face; it was a German plane flying just some tens of metres above them. Marjorie recalls her and her friends jumping into a field once they saw this – a decision she now looks back on as slightly ridiculous, as the field left them in full view of the passing plane!

Marjorie’s uncle was a soldier in the war – she holds a letter received from him, which she has also kindly allowed us to share. A huge thank you to Marjorie for sharing this with us – a reminder that everyone has a story worth listening to.

Introducing Live-In Care

Introducing Live-In Care

EDS Homecare’s Live-In Care has expanded into a wonderful and popular service for a multitude of reasons. It is an extremely flexible service, from permanent care, to providing end-of-life comfort, and is even perfect for short-term main carer respite.

While it is continuing to evolve and is proving to be a successful service for many of our service users, let’s take a look back to see how it all began for EDS Homecare – with a long-standing client, Chris, who wanted to go back to his own home after a long respite stay.

Live-In Care

Live-In Care

EDS Homecare now offers a dedicated Live-In Care service, which is a great service to try before making the move from your home, into a care home, or alternatively if you or your loved one wish to come home from a care home setting but require that one-to-one support.

As well as the functional, day-to-day benefits above, Live-In Care offers exceptional social benefits too.

The carer is your companion and can support you to access the community, try out new activities with you, or attend any groups, appointments or other social activities with you.

It’s a service that will always provide you with one-to-one care and socialisation, home-cooked meals, shopping, cleaning, gardening, pet care and more, all in the comfort of your own home.

Latest client comment

We work hard to continue to deliver the highest levels of customer care and to maintain our CQC ratings, but the ultimate test of our services is the comments we receive from those we care for and their families.

Here is a recent testimonial we’re delighted to share.

It’s so difficult for us to admit when you can no longer provide all the care requirements for our loved one, but rather than reacting to a crisis, which will inevitably arise, I would personally like to recommend EDS Homecare services.

They have come into our lives and taken on all the care responsibilities with kindness and professionalism.

Never rushed, the care staff offer individual care, personally tailored to your loved one’s requirements.

They never leave until they are satisfied that they have completed the care plan and are always asking if there is any more they can do before leaving.

Any difficulties, which the care staff find, are reported immediately and can be resolved with a phone call to medical professionals or to family members.

The whole team are polite, professional and caring, nothing is too much trouble.

The charges for their services are very competitive, but the peace of mind is incalculable.

I can’t recommend them highly enough.

Our new offices

Our new offices

Earlier this year we moved into brand new offices at The Glass Yard in Chesterfield, which brought together everyone from our offices in the Peak District and Dronfield.

As we continue to expand our operations and our client numbers increase we needed a central location that would cover the Derbyshire Dales, North Derbyshire and parts of South Yorkshire.

The new offices incorporate dedicated training rooms and they provide a focal point for expanding team of carers.
